The preparation for the wood is always the most important step. For staining, sand with 220 grit, wipe off, condition with wood conditioner, stain, polyurethane coat. All ingredients can be found at Lowes or Home Depot. Read instructions on the can. It’s really fun and the wood will change its character,right before your eyes!
My favourite thing to use on wood is Unicorn SPiT - it's a gel stain, and you can dilute it with water if you want to allow some nice wood grain show through.
