How and when should I trim back my butterfly bush?

It is about 6 feet tall. Plant is about 5 years old. Full sun.

You don't say where you live, but I live on Long Island, and every year I cut mine down to about 12-18 inches tall while it is still dormant from winter--late February/early March here.

It grows to full size every summer.

  US too our Husband trims ours down every year too 3 feet keeps growing taller each year this has been going on for years
