Technically you can't. Nature will always win. The best you can do is dig them up the minute you spot a weed or something that does not belong. Any breeze, birds and animals spread stuff like crazy. All you can do is stay on top of it.
After your lawn is established, many people use Preen products and claim they are successful. I will not use them so unable to attest to their effectiveness.
