Find where the squeak is coming from and using thin nail that you can get through the carpet hammer it down in. The pull the nap of the carpet up and hammer again to set the nail into the flooring. A carpenter showed me that trick. Was just a matter of a few floorboards coming loose. Hope this helps.

There are kits you can purchase that show you how to solve the problem with screws and instructions, try Home Depot or Lowes. I have also used Galvanized 10d, or 16d Casing nails (Finished Head only!) By finding the squeak and the adjacent floor joist drive a nail thru the carpet and into the Joist. put enough pressure on the floor while driving the nail and making sure your hitting the joists. By hitting the nail hard enough you will be able to tell if it is below the level of the pad below the carpet. If you don't hit a joist you could possibly create new squeaks, so make sure your hitting something really solid as your driving the nail-- if you miss and you can see the nail driving without resistance, Stop -pull the nail back and angle it one way or the other to see if you can make SOLID contact with the joist. The galvanized nail will grip exceptionally well and after you've driven the nail through the carpet, roughing up the carpet area the nail went through will make it appear nothing has even happened. The screw system I mentioned does the same thing but is much more expensive!

pull carpet aside best you can drill small hole near squeak spray in 10 w 40 or pam cooking spray

  • I squeeky floor is usually from a loose floor board. I was always told to put powder down, which does help a little bit. But it is easier to fix the issue and add some more nails to the floorboards. A brad nail gun works great because there is no need to pull up the carpets if you have them.

I would definitely go with Anita's reply. The reason floors creak is because over time the boards loosen and they need tightening. However I would opt for pulling up the carpet in case you have nice wood under it. If it's in the middle of the floor (which it usually is from more wear to the area) pull the carpet from the closest wall and start rolling it up so you can make your repair. This repair should last at least another ten to twenty years depending on the wood underneath.

Pull up the carpet and screw the sub flooring into the floor joists.

    Then have the carpet re-stretched.

There’s a tool that’s made just for this job. It also comes with special screws that the head snaps off flush with the floor. The tool is very inexpensive. You just need to locate the joist(s) with a stud finder...another inexpensive tool. Here’s a link to Amazon for the tools.

If the area that’s squeaking is on the lower level & you have a basement or crawl below it I e used shims between the floor bard & the support beams. Never have had a problem since! Cheap & easy!

Tom Silva, of " This Old House" shows a video where he uses a newer product (Squeek no More) that attaches special bits to a drill and a device used for carpet. They're installed through the carpet, cure the squeek, and are not detectable!

You have to lift your carpet and get a carpenter to nail down the floor boards, the reason for a carpenter, he should know the right way to nail the boards down.
