How can I update my kitchen in my rental apartment?

It is a rental apartment, we would like to give it a fresh clean look. Right now it looks dirty no matter how we clean it and peeling everywhere. We obviously don't want to put to much into it. Can you help?
Use removable contact paper
A fresh coat of paint on the cupboards and metal paint on the hardware (if you don’t want to put the money into replacing the hardware with updated stuff) will make a huge difference to the look without spending a lot of cash

First I would make sure what is acceptable from landlord. Paint would be my second thought if he approves.
You could use temporary wall paper on the cabinets.
