Looking for ways to update an old steamer trunk

I'm not intending to totally restore it but want it to look nice and new. It has the original stamped, metal, manufacturer's identification on it. I looked it up and this certain shape was only made between 1895 to 1897 by that company. It is in pretty good shape, with wood slats on the outside that are still solid. The tin surfaces between the slats is rather beat up and bumpy but has no holes or tears in it. The leather handles are deteriorated but I looked into where I could get those already. I can't decide what colors to finish it in so am looking for suggestions, specifically pictures of other trunks. Thanks for your help.
