White pine unfinished mantel question

Our fireplace is being refaced with 3 or 4 different sizes small, grey slate. Am planning to do one wall a dark grey to match couch, others light grey. Am thinking of either using a grey or black clear stain on the mantel or, maybe grey or blackwash the mantel. Will this work for the mantel?

I'm sure any color of stain would work on it just fine.

What color is your flooring and the baseboards? The previous owner had painted the mantel black, the baseboards were white and the flooring a mahogany. I painted the fireplace wall a darker shade of grey and the other walls a lighter gray and the black mantel and the surround looked awful. Painted it white and it looked so much better. I would wait until you paint the walls and the slate is installed and make your decision then.

Do you have a sample of the slate? If you have one I would gather swatches of the wall colors you are thinking about and a black swatch and a white swatch and put them all alongside the slate to see which mantle color looks best to your eye. That might help and get you closer to pre-paint before it's installed. My room is about half the size of yours with not much natural light so white was the best choice for me. Good luck!

I like the idea of gray clear stain. But, as Kalueke suggested, I think you should paint the walls and install your tile before making a decision regarding the mantel. Best of luck to you.

I think the black sounds elegant and the whole project very classy!
