    One of your state’s Universities has a State Extension that provides resources and Research on gardening and agriculture. They also train Master Gardeners that reside in Massachusetts that will most likely have a hotline or provide you some help and answer questions. Keepin mind that what grows in the eastern, western, northern and south parts of the state can vary significantly. Soil Testing is recommended. Always right Plant, right Place — is plant in full shade,part,some sun, full sun? There are many variables, Zone,Moisture, etc. Typically plants grown locally whether from a nursery or getting starts or seeds from friends and native plants are usually best if new to gardening.

    Your local nursery should stock the best plants for your area. Ask a lot of questions. They should be knowledgeable. If not, go to another nursery.
