Shade-loving, drought-tolerant plant suggestions for the south?

Better Homes and Gardens published a book called Step By Step Shade Gardens. It has 31 pages with 5 colored pictures per page of nothing but plants and shrubs for shade gardens - with growing directions. It's great for finding interesting plants outside the old boring tried and true.

Google your location and "growing zone". Once you know your growing zone, you can then google any type of plants you may want. Example: google "shade plants for growing zone 10b"

Check with your local gardening store (not the big box store). They will carry a wide variety of plants/trees for just your needs.
