When applying new roof shingles is it better to use nails or staples?

I suggest talking to the county building office. Whatever you do, make sure your contractor is licensed and insured. I found out the hard way.

First, check local code to see what they require. Most municipalities have on line. In CA a new roof requires a permit and at least 3 inspections. These links will explain in more detail.

I had my roof completely replaced in 2005 and used roofing nails. It can get windy here during certain times of the year and 90 mph + have been recorded in my area. I purchased a "30 year" product, and so far, so good.

I would Recomend coil nail roofing guns and applied at a steady rhythm,throughout the day! Machine gun,rapid sounding,is too fast to correctly apply the nails in the proper area on shingle,or crooked,unseated nails,will void manufacturers warranty as well!Cheapest isn’t always best!Choose a qualified licensed Roofing Contractor and don’t be afraid to ask questions!
