I am attaching a video which gives some steps to prep the bales to begin. There are other videos on youtube that may also be useful at different points in the process. Good luck! https://youtu.be/Grd6y8Du1Ls

Don’t expect weed and bug free gardening.
Do stack two bales high if you are tall; one if you can bend over or you are short. You need to be able to pick your produce without a ladder.
Do mix seeds with some soil before you put the seeds on the hay, so the seeds don’t just fall too deeply.
Do use your hands to spread the hay when you are making a hole for plants.
Don‘t place the hay next to your house or other wood structures, to try to avoid ants or termites.
Do have a good time. ☺️
Google weed free certified hay to see if it is available in your area. Will be worth it.

Make sure you buy straw and not hay! It’s cheaper.
