Keep in mind that your choice of fabrics is unlimited. A friend used her husbands old ties. Gorgeous

  • I made a bunch of these one year. I actually went and bought sheets from the thrift store because they were so much cheaper.

Braided rugs are easy, but take a good while. Cut the material in long strips about an inch wide. Take 3 strips and sew them together at one end and braid. When you get close to the end of the strips sew by hand 3 more on and keep braiding. When you get finished with all the strips lay the strip in an oval circle or round circle and hand stitch them together starting at the center and work your way out.

i have been rolling an idea around in my head for awhile...to make a small rug or even a rustic placemat, I have been thinking about using clothesline or possibly macrame cord...braiding three pieces just as if you are using fabric then sewing the strips together.

As Lenore mentioned above that is the way my mother made all the rugs in my childhood home. She saved fabric from every piece of clothing that was no longer useful, old blankets, sheets, and any other fabric scraps she could round up. She would spend evenings seated on the floor add to the rugs until she had them to the size she wanted. There were always bags of fabric in her closet waiting to be ripped to size to start or add to a rug.
