What could be happening to my day lilys

I live in Missouri, the soil is very rocky and I have red clay. My area of orange day lilys have been surviving for over 60 years with no assistance. The last few years they have not been blooming very well so I have been trying to find out if they need nutrients and what kind. Any suggestions?

It could be that they are weakening from age and it may be time to refresh by planting new bulbs. A low number fertilizer sprinkled around the plants might help get them going again. When and if you plant new bulbs, put some blood meal in the hole before placing the bulb so the squirrels do not dig them up.

Have you dug up and separated any? They may be too crowded after all these years. I dig mine and separate every 2 or 3 years. I have replanted many to make my daylily garden bigger and given many to friends and family to get them started with their own.

    Hi Laura,

Click on the article below to read about what I learned. Even though they've been surviving for 60 years, this sentence jumped out at me "Remove seed pods after bloom to prevent seed production. Plants producing seed are likely to have fewer flowers the following year." It's possible they are running out of room in the rocky, clay soil. Also they di like an acidic soil, so keep that in mind. Wishing you the best.

Daylillies need to be split every 2-3 years to keep them blooming. I have taken to removing a clump every few feet.

Test the ph in the soil to ensure they are getting the nutrients they need.
