Trust me, if you can tape straight lines and paint in between them, then you can do this paint design! I wrote up a thorough step by step tutorial with tons of pictures on my blog, Girls Build Club. You'll end up with an awesome painted bench that will fit in with any beachy coastal decor or bohemian interior decor.

Beachy Striped Boho Painted Bench - DIY

This was a relatively cheap project, as I already had the bench made. The paint I used was cheap acrylic craft paint - the Americana brand, from Hobby Lobby and Michael's, that runs around a $.89 per bottle. Then I used some cheap foam brushes, painter's tape, sandpaper sponge, and a craft knife for trimming the tape.

I can just picture this bench sitting outside facing the pacific ocean on a warm summer evening.

First you just go crazy taping stripes all over the bench in a random order. Tape off stripes in different widths, with some going across the two boards, and some only going halfway across, to the middle seam.

Paint a bunch of random blues in between all the taped lines. Before it's all dry, pull up the tape and this is what you'll see. Nothing pretty yet...

Do another round of taping and painting. This time I painted in greenish-blue tones, and left a couple bare spots for a color wash at the end. Next, I did the color wash and added the bright colors for a focal point so all the blues and greens weren't too boring.

After painting all the stripes, I sanded it all down a ton! I focused on sanding the edges and corners, and wherever I thought it would naturally get worn down with a lot of wear and use. I haven't decided whether to keep the base natural or to paint it. But for now, it's natural, and I think it goes well with the blue tones. What do you think?
