Can I use polyurethane top coat?

My guess is that appliance paint is not made to have a polyurethane top coat, but I could be wrong. My thinking is that any articles online don't suggest using a sealer when using appliance paint. However, there is more than one type of appliance paint. My suggestion would be to try one of two things. Try it on a scrap piece of wood to see what happens, or better yet, call or email the manufacturer of the appliance paint, explain what you did, and ask them your question. They would be the experts about their paint formula. Wishing you the best.

Polyurethane ought to work fine. Brush on—follow the grain of the wood, dry, sand gently to remove bubbles, apply a second coat. Spray on-- do at least three coats, drying between each coat. ☺️

I have to agree with Jewell. But I would wait at least 3 weeks after the enamel paint was applied, giving it time to cure.

You definitely want to let the paint cure first; at least a weeks time. I suggest applying the poly with a brush rather than a roller.

It will be fine on the wood - I do it all of the time, but don't use it on non -wood or even non-dark wood surfaces, it will yellow.

Not sure about the base of appliance paint. Here is the RULE - you can use any top coat on a water base paint. BUT if the base paint is oil based you MUST use oil base top coat. You can put oil over water base, but never water based on oil because it will bubble up &/or peel

Water based polyurethane does not yellow. Oil based does. The rule for oil over water and vice versa applies to paint not a top coat. Always best to protect the paint with a top coat. I use at least three coats of a water based polyurethane whether over paint, stain, or raw wood. Use a lambs wool applicator for the floor. Screws on to a threaded broomstick. No streaks or brush marks.

I would wait for the paint to cure then use lacquer Rustoleum spray paint., sand lightly in between coats and do 2 coats.
