How to fix dent in dining room table?

My dining room table has dent not a scratch through the finish.It was heavily padded but a bolt or something made a dent about 8 inches long. Can this be fixed by using an iron and damp cloth to plump it up?

You can try steaming it out..wet an old clean washcloth, double over a couple times then place over the dent. Tale your iron already on Hi, and “ iron over the dent area“ using the tip of the iron.. try to just iron a narrow strip over the dent, as you want the heated steam to raise the wood. Press with a bit of pressure, not a lot and iron along the length of the dent for a few minutes. no guarantee, but it’s a tried and proven method to raise dents in wood surfaces.. Don’t touch the table surface with your iron or you will probably mess up the finish worse. If the dent raises , then use a good paste wax over the surface to help seal it..good luck.. I’m sue there is a U-tube out there somewhere if you dig enough that will show you the sequence pictoriall..

Try the matchstick trick-dip a matchstick in water and use the matchstick to fill the dent with water. Even though water can damage almost any finish, you can use water effectively to remove dents. Water can make lacquer or varnish turn a slightly white, or blue color. This is known as "blushing." But if water is not allowed to remain on the surface of the finish for an extended amount of time, it does not harm the lacquer. When a dent occurs in a finished wood surface, it fractures the finish. This allows just enough water to penetrate into the wood fibers below. When a small amount of blushing does occur, you can easily remove it by adding an oil-based stain to the affected area.
