Anything goes! Does not always need to be photos. Any art will look pretty. Plants (faux) or real, wreaths, random objects, whatever goes with your decor. Here are some links to get ideas.

we have a gallery of drawings and prints of women's heads. Some were done by my husband, others were found, and some were purchased. I think there are 25 or so hung here. Our staircase is open into our living room, so we need something on this wall. I would advise picking a theme and sticking with it. It doesn't have to be framed things. You could wallpaper it with maps, or sea charts, or real wallpaper, or china. Many years ago I had a friend who wallpapered her toddler child's room with uncolored large pages from an Alice in Wonderland coloring book. If you have a particular interest or hobby it would be fun to use that (hey, just gave myself an idea!)
