What is the best way to strip an old chair for re painting?

This is never an easy task I know but the MULTI-STRIP 1 gal. Multiple Layer Paint and Varnish Remover is $49.97 from Home Depot and is great. Good luck

Unless you want to sand every layer off, I would use something like citristrip, it may take more than one go at it to get all the layer, but much less labor intensive.

Buy CitriStrip Stripping Gel. It safer, it has less odor, and works well if you follow the directions. Once applied to the old paint it does have to set for a long time before you can start removing the old paint. Your chair has many old layers of paint--this could take a while and it will be a lot of work.

Be sure to use protective gear- safety goggles, gloves and a respirator mask that blocks the fumes. Do this in a well ventilated area. If you prefer not to use chemicals use a paint stripping gun and scraper. When you get the bulk of it off you will switch to sandpaper and elbo grease! Again use protective gear as there is a high likelihood that one of those 12 coats of paint is lead based. I had a desk covered in paint- many layers. I used the citrus trip because it allowed me to get into the curves, crevices and carvings. Result was fantastic!
