Hi Fran,
Here's an article that should help you decide if they are too hard to care or look after. Good luck.

Spirea shrubs are very easy to grow in temperate climates. They prefer full sun, moderately well drained soils but will tolerate a few weeks without rain too. Pretty adaptable. A common sight in old Midwestern gardens. Provide enough room for them to develop to their full size. A hedge trimmed spirea is adaptable pretty sad sight.
Spirea is an easy to care for shrub. It doesn't require any special care. Sun, water and light pruning will keep it happy
Neither, but check book on perennials or shrubs to see if your zone will support them as well as what light you need (that's usually my problem). Check with neighbors to see if mice or deer are liking them in your area. Animal palates change over the years.
Plant DEEPLY enounough, water in and follow the shrub directions for watering. If they try to bloom the first year trim buds off. The plant needs that nourishment for at least first year
