How to change white fireplace mantle?

would like to give my fireplace mantle a rustic look. Any ideas how I can easily cover the current white wooden mantle? Thank you!

If you like the size and look of your mantle buy a glaze in a darker wood tone and apply it. You will have total control of how dark or light you want it to be by simply wiping off the glaze. Try using a plastic bag crunched up to make wood grain lines in it. If you don't like that look try an old cloth.
