Both for furniture & signs for walls, does chalk paint require wax as a last step finish or sealer?

You should seal your chalk paint with something or the paint might scratch off and also be very difficult to clean. You don't have to use wax if you are making signs. You can use a clear sealer spray--Rustoleum makes one. For furniture you can use wax or a clear poly BUT it depends on your chalk paint. Some chalk paints do not take poly well--you may get cracks and bubbles in your paint when you spray or brush poly over the paint. I like finishing with wax--it brings a nice sheen to finished projects and feels so smooth. Add wax to the cost of chalk paint can be another layer of expense but a small can of wax lasts forever. You only apply a small amount and then buff. Sometimes 2 thin coats is best. Another thing to think about is whether or not you need to use chalk paint--sometimes another paint will work just as well and doesn't require sealing after.
