lilac blooms should be pruned off 6 weeks after they have finished blooming. I have cut the branches back hard at the same time. Cut out old branches

Cut all old blooms off every year. What I do is give bouquets to everyone I know

Just after the flowers fade. Lilacs will set the next seasons buds almost immediately, so don't wait or you will risk losing next year's blooms.

The time to prune mature lilac plants is just after the flowers have faded.
