How do I deter intruding hawks?

I have a large bird feeder in my backyard. It gives me a lot of pleasure because it attracts a large number of bird species--from the diminutive humming bird to the larger turtle-doves. Some are permanent others are migratory. The problem is that in this area there are also medium and large hawks that hover daily and seem to think that I have a buffet for them. Sometimes I am able to scare them away by making loud noises but most of the time they win and leave nothing but feathers in my yard. I know they also have to eat, but it is so sad to see how they follow and attack the innocent turtle doves.icon

Thank you Janet. The site you suggested gave me a lot to think about. It did not make me feel better but sadder after reading all the comments. But in a way I am a bit wiser. I left a comment.

I have a lot of hawks to. Some so brave this year they perch right on the bush wit the feeders...waiting for that little chicadee.. Freaks me out.

I put an owl where the hawks seem to wait...and so far..so good ! I know they are hungry too...and I sympathize...but I don't want them eating my little friends either .

  • Try decoy owls and snakes. Sometimes you might need to stop feeding for a few days or change up your feeding pattern. Try feeding in morning or afternoon only and take the feeders in when not in use.

Be aware that hawks and owls are federally protected. You may not kill them. The above site will tell you what you can do though. And remember if you have any mice, they are as good as cats to keep them away.

A bigger lawn umbrella higher than the feeder and covered with chicken wire rather than fabric will deter them and protect the smaller birds.

I'd try some fake lifelike owls. Inflatable ones are available, fairly cheap.

I had a pair of hawks living in my back yard one year. I didn't notice them eating the birds, but when the acorns came in I had a bumper crop. Took me a while to realize it was because there were no squirrels to eat them. The hawks didn't come back the next year, so we were back to normal.

Aren't owls used to deter birds? My next door neighbor has owls and it not deterring anything. I think they are for deterring pigeons.
