I recently purchased an all light weight Teal blue metal plant stand. this metal stand is 3-tier, in teal blue, I would like to spray paint it in burgundy red, just how many coats of paint would I need to do this project, it is 36 inches tall, and 39 inches around.

If you clean it first and use one of the excellent paints with primer in them, my guess is two. We painted several items for our yard this way.

Each project depends on the condition of the piece when you start painting, the geometry of the surfaces, skill of the person applying the paint, and the desired look of the piece when finished. As Kiturah said, be certain that at least two coats are necessary but don't stop at two because we said so. Many refinishers also apply several coats of clear after painting to result in a higher depth of finish and luster.
  • First you need to clean it, then prime and then paint. 2 -3 coats.

You will need metal paint spray and apply as many light coats as you need to cover. Purchase at least two cans. To be safe get an extra one as you can always return it if you do not use it.

Joychevi has the best solution. Clean and lightly sand. Use a metal spray primer to prevent the teal from bleeding through. Then use a metal spray paint. Several light coats letting each dry will get you best coverage and a smooth finish.
