What to plant by the ocean?

I live right on the beach near the ocean. The salty breeze, the daily sun, the sand crabs, almost no dirt, etc. make it very hard to have a nice yard garden. Any ideas for plants that would do well?

Nice slippers!!!! The best thing for you to do is to build a raised bed out of the hot sun. Check with your local garden center for plants that you like according to color, size and shape.

  thank you. I have been to a few plant nursery's and even had some of the gardeners come out here. so finally, I am finding a few plants that will live. mostly desert plants. one called Flor de Mayo does well, another is flor del deserto. The little crabs do not seem to bother the roots of those. and Bougainvillea does well and sometimes Hibiscus. I guess I just have to keep buying plants and see if they will live .
