I love decorating with candles and gifting with candles. These three ways also provide a fun activity for an adult and children. The adult will need to handle the hot wax, but there are plenty of activities for children to participate. Learn how to make eggs, ice cube, and soda pop shaped candles.
Eggs: make egg shaped candles with egg shells. Gather old or worn candles that are white and use food dye or that are colored. I had both types when I emptied my drawer of dinner candles.
You will need to save the wicks for all three candle types. Use egg shells that have nickel sized openings in the top to get the egg shape. Rinse them and set them in an egg carton for balance to fill with melted wax. Melt the wax for the candles in a pan on low. Add the color and pour from a glass beaker type cup into each egg shell. I put them back in the fridge and they cooled faster. Just peel off the shells and nest them in moss or Easter grass.
Soda Pop: I melted an OLD brown holiday candle for my "soda pop" candles. Remove the paper labels and save them. Tie wicks to short dowel rods or pencils and pour the colored wax into the appropriate bottles. For example, I used green for the sprite type and brown for the cola type. Let set all night to set up and cool. I did all this on an old cookie sheet.
My husband had to cut them off for me, but they really are so fun it is worth the trouble! He used a box cutter and also his drill to cut part of it. Tape the drink labels back on the candle when you remove the plastic.
Ice cube: The last type is made with ice cubes in a waxy container. I use chips' cans, quart juice or milk, half-half, any waxy container. Place your wick on top with the rod. Fill it with ice pieces and pour wax over the cubes. The hot wax will melt the ice and it will be ready in half an hour. Remove the container over the sink. Water will run out as you tear it off.
These are a few we made and kept. The rest were gifts.
The ice cube candles are really lacy. The smaller the cubes the lacier. I thought a video might show them better than the still photos. Different shapes and sizes make them more interesting to display.
Faux Bottles that are really candles, with their original lids and wrappers.
