Barkeepers friend! Does not scratch & avail at Walmart
These are two different metals and require different approaches.
Good luck.
For silver, combine 1 sheet aluminum foil, to fit in sink 1 tablespoon baking soda, 1 tablespoon salt and 2 cups very hot water. Put your tarnished silver and silver plated items into the sink and let sit for a few minutes. Watch as the tarnish disappears from the silverware and reappears on the foil. Rinse extremely well with water to prevent pitting of silverplate.
there is a product called "Never Dull" that you can use on both metals. It's not expensive and I've used it for years.
Have you tried toothpaste? I've used it for years on my faucets and fixtures for years and they're still shiny. It also works on your jewelry--chains, rings, earrings, bracelets, etc., if you use a soft toothbrush to apply it.
I sell a lot of silver on Ebay. Jewelry, silverware, serving sets. Silver polish like Wrights and dips like TarnX tend to remove some of the metal. The foil method doesn't work that great and still leaves a grey film that still needs to be removed. I use white toothpaste (not gel) and a damp toothbrush. For large items I use a damp cloth. Also works on copper, brass, gold, porcelain, ceramics, sneakers, plastics, etc. For my sales I needed one product for cleaning everything.
They make a cleaner for it. If you ask someone at the hardware store, I’ll show you where it is :)
