Any ideas on organizing this closet.

This closet is used to store all of our blankets and bedding sets for the household.

I would get "space bags" - put each set in a bag, and suck the air out, then "file" them, standing on end.

Take everything out and categorize what you want to keep (If you haven't used something in a year you should ditch it-you don't need it. Same with things you have duplicates of for "just in case") Boxes/baskets from the dollar store are great for corralling small items. Fabric items not used often can be put in plastic storage bags with a dryer sheet to keep them fresh. Looks like it may be bedding items in the closet. Separate by size and create a shelf per size - queen on one shelf, twin on another. Items used infrequently-say linens for a guest room-should go on the less accessible shelves and those things you use regularly at eye/hand level. If you have old Closet Maid type shelving with big support brackets that get in the way, consider changing shelving. Pinterest has lots of great organizing ideas. Good luck!

I just re-organized my linen closet. First I took out all of the linens, bed sets, tables cloths and mats. I took the sheets that I use together folded and put into one of the pillow cases and did that for 2 sets of sheets for each bed. I put some extra sheets for extra people who visit and use my air mattresses in a container. The extras I put in plastic zipper bags purchased as a Dollar Tree or Dollar Store or plastic zipper bags that came with bedspreads, etc., and put those in a closet top shelf (you can decide where is best, like a storage cube or crate). I did the same thing with the bedding sets, putting them into the bags since I change out seasonally. I left the Summer/Fall ones on the shelf, the Winter/Spring ones in a storage bag. I went through my towels, etc and designated guest towel sets rolling them and putting in a basket or some container to bring out when guests are there. I removed towels that were really ready for rag bin. I folded towels for storage, and wash rags I fold and put into a wicker container. I keep some decorative towels in bathroom along with hand towels on each side of the sink. Huge bath towels are on a door hanging rack for towels used for showers/baths. I wash those regularly so the towels in the linen closet are just for overflow needs. Trust this will give you some creative ideas to work from your own creativity

I see the problem! I would suggest that you try some vacuum seal bags. Purchase ones that are large enough to accommodate the various sizes you require. (obviously pillows are going to need something a different size than a blanket or quilt). Then vacuum them down to size. Don't forget they still weigh the same - so don't overload your shelves. That should be all you need. I think Walmart even sells the bags. I'm pretty sure you can get them just about anywhere on the internet.

Pull 'em out, sort and keep what's good and likely to be reused, send rejects to Goodwill, Animal shelter (always needs blankets for pets to sleep on) or trash. Bag 'em. Add additional shelves if needed. Re-stack, like items together.

I have started folding sheet sets together and then storing them in the pillowcase. or you could try the vacuum bags that they sell. I have used those on pillows ..they still fluff up nicely when you open them.

first separate the items with what is same, then fold by rolling and place like items in old pillow cases or small cartoon boxes and label them..place 2 fabric softener sheets in each container to keep smelling clean and fresh

I agree with everyone who has said first go through the lot and do not put back into the closet anything that you have not used in a year, that is stained, or ripped. Ask yourself, do you really need to be keeping those odd sized pillow shams and extra throw pillows? Yes, throw them on to a better home!

Yes Ill take out everything, then you can organized in plastic boxes very nice or put in plastic bags and take the air out with the vacuum or just fold properly and putter back, good luck 😀

I put my out of season items in air tight bags in the attic. If you have such, it would free up a lot of space.

I got soft side fabric basket/tubs which had an open handle so I made cute labels, laminated them and looped around the handle which faced the front. All my queen size sheets in one, twins in another, hand towels/wash clothes, etc. All bulky pillows and extra bedding not used regularly was placed in a shrink bag and put on top shelf.

I personally would take everything out of the closet and anything that has not been used in 6 months donate, you will be amazed on all the things we tend to hold on to. Then the dollar tree has those vacuum bags that shrink winter blankets etc for next year that tend to to bulk up that space. This will start you in the right direction 📌

I have a closet sort of space in our attic. This is where I store blankets, comforters, seasonal pillows etc. But the attic is kind of big so pillows are actually everywhere. I use large plastic flexible storage zipper containers. I keep wool blankets together and I keep the folds in the front so they look neater. I also have throws, some velvet things, some small scatter rugs that I place under the bags. I did try the vacuumed bags but they have to have all the contents removed at once. doesn't really work that way IRL Rhonda, you may have too many categories of things in this closet and things would look neater if the folded ends faced the front.

vacuum bags would really help ! before vacuum sealing, write what size the sheet/comforter/blanket/pillow cases are on two 8x10 white sheets of paper in large letters with magic marker. Have each paper facing outside of vacuum bag (tape into place if you need to) and that way you don't have to open up each vacuum bag to see what you have in them.

is it possible for you to build or buy pre built shelves that will multiply your space?

  • Janice Janice on May 06, 2018

The vacuum bags are great and will help to store more in a small area, but if you don't want to invest in them you might try folding the blankets in 1/2 or 1/3rds and rolling them and securing by tieing with a strip of plastic bag in about 3 different places. The "rolls" of blankets, comforters can be stacked either horizontally or vertically.
