The one detail you have not provided is the most important one. Containers can be made of different materials and cleaning is different for each. If you've heated a tomato-based sauce in a plastic storage container in a microwave, replacement is the only option.
If it has been heated in the microwave with the sauce in it, it may be permanent. The acid in the tomatoes and the sugar will get it into the plastic when heated.
What is container? Plastic? Tin? Ceramic? Glass?
You can try putting a squirt of original blue dawn, some white vinegar and water in the container and let it soak overnight. Use the scrubby side of a sponge and see if it comes off. Often once the container has been in the microwave or dishwasher the stains don't come out.
