Our Command Center consists of three chalkboards. The third board, our Evening Plans, needs refreshing.

A piece of slate
First, I use a piece of slate which can be purchased at any gardening store. I chose slate instead of a chalkboard as it is much less expensive. Wash your piece well. Now you're ready to paint.
Chalkboard paint
Chalkboard Paint (Decor Art-Hobby Lobby $3.95) I followed the directions. Paint horizontally and let that dry for an hour. Then paint vertically and let dry one hour. Paint a second coat. Allow the slate to fully dry; 4 hours.
Painting. I used an art brush.
Glue a piece of felt to the back of the slate as a protection. I had an old wood frame that was a bit too wide. I adjusted the size by adding a piece of scrap wood to the top and bottom of the old wood frame. Cut the wood to fit tightly and then used Wood Glue to secure the wood inlay. Sand and stain the frame and the inlay. It looks rustic.

Felt back of slate with frame.
Attach a three nail hanger to hold the weight of the sign.
