I lay lots of newspaper on the floor and spray onAwesome from the dollar store.
Wipe off thoroughly and rinse with lots of clean water.
I just vaccum and use a dust cloth on mine. If you're going to paint it, I would go with Pung61's suggestion above.

I’ve used TSP, then Muriatic acid, then painted the brick outside the firebox with no problem.
Our fireplace has really rough bricks that had been stained with oily soot from previous fires. After smoothing away the "snowdrop" mortar, we had a mason come in and power wash the fireplace and seal it to prevent further soot staining and make it easier to dust clean. The seal left a barely perceptible sheen, but we are okay with that.
