I'm painting a wood desk and want to use Annie Sloan Chalk paint as a base and paint details with acrylic paint, has anyone done this? When would I seal with wax?

Most lampshades are translucent, letting light shine through the material. Any paint, including chalk, will not allow the light to shine through.
You could use chalk paint. Light will shine above and below. Chalk paint will give a flat finish
