How to know what to trim on hydrangeas

    Trim hydrangeas only if they do not bloom on the old wood. You need to know what kind you have before trimming. My PG or Annabelle are trimmed back about two feet and shaped each Spring.

    To get bigger flowers, cut them all the way back. In late winter or early spring, these shrubs can be cut all the way back to the ground. Smoothhydrangeas will produce much larger blooms if pruned hard like this each year, but many gardeners opt for smaller blooms on sturdier stems.

    Do not trim them- the variety dictates if you can- and unless you are planting one and know the exact variety- don’t trim them
