Google talavera toilet - can it be painted?

I would research this extensively on Google. There are sites about painting toilets and sites about painting porcelain. They recommend an epoxy paint, with lots of prep work on the surfaces. Try “can I paint the inside of a toilet bowl” and other wording. Good luck to you. And yes, they’re gorgeous.

While doing research I’d also try to find one on sale. I know they’re $500 at Rustica, but they must be somewhere else!

While reading about these unique toilets, I came across this paragraph regarding how these are made. This should give you some insight into the process.

"Today Mario's small shop has grown to a full toilet factory where he can manufacture them from scratch. This is a big must when producing talavera hand painted toilets, the artwork must be done at a the "raw" state of the toilet, previous to be glazed and burned at the high temp ovens. Some lower quality hand painted toilets are done after glazed, in this case the paint will fade in not time. But with Mario's full manufacture process your talavera toilet will keep its paint with not signs of fading for the life time of your toilet."

So it looks like it's possible to perhaps do this, but because of the reqirements that it be done on a raw surface, then glazed & burned, it doesn't look like it will last - no matter what kind of paint you use. Here's where I found that quote:

They are absolute works of art. I first saw this technique 35+ years ago when I went with my dad to kitchen and bath trade shows for contractors - I was immediately in love. There are also European designers too, the work is amazing. Since you are painting on already glazed porcelain, I would try and find artists in your area to help you out. Any arts schools in your vicinity? Once you figure it out, you can teach all of us. If I ever win the lottery . . . One of the things on my wish list!

I would keep the decoration only to the outside plus the if I were you. Use something like Glass Paint or maybe undercoat with ESP (Easy Surface Preparation and then paint with maybe Acrylic paint or Gloss.????
