Can a chimney be removed from the roof line?
The chimney leaks water and I would like to have it removed and have it roofed over. The pipe exhaust pipe from my furnace comes the chimney. Would this be a problem?

Linda Sikuton Apr 2, 2018Hi Lrw1543,From what I've seen and experienced in my home, the furnace exhaust pipe does not go through my fireplace, even though the both come out the chimney. In my opinion, it would be safer to have the chimney repointed and/or sealed where it is leaking. Also consider your town/city/county protocol for this situation to make sure it follows the codes. One more thing is to check with your insurance company. We had a few cracks in our chimney's mortar and our insurance company required us to repair it in order to keep our homeowners insurance. Wishing you the best.HelpfulReply

Jcrawon Apr 2, 2018OMG, yes.Call a heating pro. It is possible your furnace can be vented through your foundation with some modifications. For that matter, call two or three pros for estimates/opinions. Only after that is done right can you move forward to a roofer and someone to disassemble the chimney And seal it below the roofline.HelpfulReply

Williamon Apr 2, 2018Expansive proposition. It can be removed leaving the vent pipe for the furnace in place. The opening patched around the furnace vent. The furnace vent pipe would need to be a solid pipe. Flashing for the pipe installed and the roof patched. Very costly. Cheapest would be to have the chimney inspected and repaired if possible.HelpfulReply
