One year we just cut holes in the bag of soil and planted the plants directly in the dirt. Tomatoes are a great plant for balcony and patio pots.

yes but you need the right size container one 12 inches tall and can hold a minimum of 5 gallons of potting mix would be the smallest used. you will also need to stake it up.
I have grown tomatoes in containers for over 20 years. Good soil, lots of sun, lots of water, and the right fertilizer and they will be great.
We have done this for years and had good results, as the others said...good soil, drainage, stake them and full sun. Fertilize with Epson Salt.
I have & do, just make sure they're at least 5 gallon size or larger, & have a few drainage holes. They'll need water almost daily, I water the soil, not the plants.
