How do I landscape our home?

We bought this house last April and I am so ready to get some landscaping done! I love the cleanliness of the house and don't want to change colors and i LOVE my red door. I am needing some inspiration on how to fancy it up! Also I don't know how... I don't know how to dig a garden/ flower bed... all the help would be awesome! I also don't want to do something super expensive. Less is more. I like DIY projects and want to be proud of the work I've done!

We live in central Oklahoma, and you have to take the direction your home faces into consideration in whatever landscaping choices you make. If your home faces West or Southwest you will get the full summer sun for the hottest part of the day and it will quickly fry plants that can't take the Oklahoma heat. Check with your local nursery and do some research online for plant and shrubs which will do well based on full sun or partial sun . I would plan my beds to soften the angles of your house, and do curved beds around your porch and the sidewalk. We face West (full sun) and have had good luck with daylilies, lantana and mums. We are planning a more full scale landscaping for the next few weeks. Best of luck.
Visit other 'manicured' neighborhoods and see what strikes your fancy, what's in houses with similar colors to yours, and what's planted in sun. Take pics before you head to the greenhouse. I get my best inspiration driving home the long way sometimes
My 1st opinion would be to plant a tree in the front yard. to create some depth to your lawn.
2nd would be to landscape around the lamp post.
For the house, create a visual balance with shrubs and low growing plants. The landscaping doesn't have to be a "rectangular" shape, curve the borders to add "pop".
You could also hang window boxes under the side windows for plants.
It’s pretty much a blank canvas. I would plant one large tree to be the focal point and strategically placed beds along the porch and walkway.
the better thing i did at house 2 was to get a landscape planner person to draw up a plan that could be implemented over a few years. the other thing- i grew up in a very bad neighbor hood. don't plant greenery that someone can hide in or behind. keep the prickly stuff under your windows.
what ever you choose for the landscaping- look up how big it can get, and if its considered a nuance plant---one of those that takes over a yard. plant all new beds as if each plant is mature sized esp the perennials
plant a pretty ornamental tree between the two right windows, stager some box woods and day lilies - simple upkeep - spread some pretty rock or mulch
