Can you use remnant carpet (carpet leftovers) as a rug - scratch wood?

We just installed carpet in our bedrooms and a couple of pieces are large enough to use in the living area with couches and thought to use that instead of buying a large area rug? Of course the underside could scratch the wood floors.....is there something to put underneath and what about binding the piece so it won’t fray!?!! Thanks

Carpet stores will usually bind them for you (for a fee). They also sell rug grippers which protect the floor and keep the rug from sliding.
There are places that will bind the outside of your remnant, I'm not sure what is available in your area. If you don't mind the raw edge , then don't worry about it , the rug is not going to shed enough to worry. For the underside, just get a non skid carpet pad like this one: https://www.walmart.com/ip/Better-Homes-and-Gardens-Premium-Cushioned-Non-Slip-Rug-Pad/40685380 which will keep it from scratching your floor and keep it in place.
If you just installed carpet, do you have any of the padding you used under your carpet left? If so just cut that to fit the size of the carpet you want to use as the area rug. They also have padding for area rugs at Walmart, Home Depot, Lowe's, on-line etc... that you can use as well, it will keep the carpet from sliding and also protect your floors.

Take it to the place that sold you the carpet. For a few dollars each, you can have the edge sewed so it will not fray (bound). You can purchase a piece of padding like you use for an oriental carpet. IT will keep it from sliding.
