What kind of accessories would you reccommend?

I need decorating ideas for my recently acquired home. The ceilings and trim are somewhat off white in color while the walls are mild harvest gold. Any ideas?

  • Go with "fall" color theme, greens, browns, oranges, yellows, reds. Metals in "old" or burnished finishes, nothing shiny or bright.

Start with what you own - especially the furniture and window treatments. Then select colors using the following: 60% of your color should be the main areas - walls and ceiling. The next 30% should be a complementary color (for example, the second color in your sofa or drapes), and the final 10% should be an accent color. The colors I use are based on a fabric in the sofa, or chairs or drapes that I already own. Other color inspiration could be from a print or painting your like or some other details you will have in the room. I do suggest that connecting rooms should have colors that complement each other so there is visual continuity going from one room to the other.

Congratulations on your new home. Go to your closet. Pull out the one thing that you really enjoy wearing and that makes you feel good. What's it's style? Formal, casual, fad? That's the style to use in your house. What's the color? That's the color(s) to go with. From there, live in the house for a while to get a feel for the fill ins. Good luck!

This makes me think of an Italian decor theme. Accent with purple and sage or Burgundy and olive

Acquire some decorating magazines and browse them. Doesn't matter if everything is too expensive, it is the look of a place that appeals to you and t hat is what you should aim for. Do you want bookcases? Places to store toys? What are your hobbies, and the interests of family members? Go to a store like Home Goods and look at the decorative items, what would you buy if you could afford them all? Paint is very inexpensive and what the paint colors are now in the rooms of your new house, don't have to remain there, nor do you have to limit yourself to those colors. People have definite ideas about color and pattern. I for instance really like solid colors in main pieces; sofas, chairs, curtains. I hate plaids and find them really suffocating except in throws or pillow covers. I like rugs to be patterned. We are all individual.

I have a similar color scheme. The soft gold is my "neutral color" I use dark blue furniture with it. Window treatments same color as the walls. I have deep cranberry for a wow color. Oriental rugs on the floors to tie the colors together.

Use the colors you already have and choose accent colors to accessorize!

The only way to give good advice is to know what furniture, flooring, and window treatments you have and what colors/patterns. Unless you are starting from scratch (lucky, lucky you!). Some photos of what you are starting with would be very helpful.
