Regarding roof shingles: which is best dark or light colors?

The dark will hold more heat and the light will reflect the sun. Unless you live in a very very warm climate I think you could use light or dark. What you have for insulation in your attic or attic crawl space will determine how warm or cool your house stays as well as what you have for trees around your home and how those trees shade the house at various times of the day. I have mature trees that shade my house in the afternoon from the hot west sun.

I agree with Gk. The granules on asphalt shingles are to protect the asphalt and fiberglass from deterioration from UV. Your R value in the attic should keep it from making any difference as to the interior temp. The lighter color will reflect better, but will not necessarily last longer. I would pick what looks best with the style and color of the home.

Gk is correct. You also need to consider what will look good with the style, colors, design of your home.

We live in Oregon also. Our weather here is so mild it doesn't really make a difference. Experimented with light shingles on one shed and dark shingles on a second shed. No noticeable difference here.

Dark absorbs heat in the summer. White reflects heat in summer. I went with light gray myself.

I also agree with GK. Since it is REALLY HOT where I live, I went with a lighter color. I also installed attic fans too. Even though it does not get as hot in Oregon, look into it, as along with proper insulation it can make the house more comfortable, save money on heating (and cooling) costs and extend the lifespan of your roof.

We have always had a white roof until the last one. They do not make white in longer lasting shingles so we chose a medium gray...can't seem to notice any more heat.

SUGGESTIONS: (1) Get the Architectural Shingles as they lie flatter and not as easily flipped up by wind. (2) If you are getting a new roof, have the old shingles removed and check your boards and underlayment for integrity. (3)

We chose a medium gray shingle with charcoal gutters (don't show nasty like white and grounds the roof) (4) put the downspouts on the sides of the house so you don't have to look at them from the street!!!!

(Our place is a mess! 6 trees removed, leaving sticks everywhere; bags of top soil in yard ready to work out there tomorrow!! Finally 70 degrees!)
