Do you need a better way to organize and store your office, scrapbook or craft supplies? This DIY desktop organizer is a fun way to not only use up part of your craft stash, but it also offers tons of new nooks and crannies to tuck things away in!
As a full time DIY blogger I have a lot of stuff to contend with. I primarily share bath, beauty and homemade soap recipes on my blog, Soap Deli News. However, I also like to dive into more traditional craft projects for fun. Or whenever I'm feeling a bit burnt out with all the other stuff.

On top of that, I am simply crazy about stickers, washi tape and scrapbooking supplies. And I honestly haven't made a scrapbook since my son was in the first grade. To put that into perspective, well, he's now a junior in college and applying to grad school. So.... You see where I'm going with this.

Anyhow, this Ikea MOPPE mini storage chest some time back. Like way way back sometime last year. And I just now got around to being able to do something with it. Part of that was I wasn't sure what to do with it exactly. The other part was, well, like most of us, just trying to find the time.

Unfortunately, this particular cabinet is no longer available from Ikea. (I'm hoping it becomes available again soon though as I definitely want to makeover more for various uses, not just a DIY desktop organizer.) However, don't let that stop you from tackling this project. You can apply the same idea to any unfinished wood organizer from your favorite craft store.

Let's get started!

Begin by painting the outside of the drawers, the cabinet and the wood shapes with two three coats of acrylic paint. I also painted the insides of my drawers with paint as well for contrast.

Once dry, you can add decorative washi tape to your DIY desktop organizer as desired. Then spray your organizer with two or three coats of a clear acrylic sealer to keep the washi tape in place or to further protect your cabinet.
Now use E-6000 to glue cute curio knobs to the the notches in the drawers (or where your drawer handles would be.) You can use masking tape to hold the curio knobs in place until the glue has set up. (Note that it can take up to 72 hours for E-6000 to fully set up.)

Then glue on your painted wood shapes.
Next, use the E-6000 to glue the footed foundations onto the bottom of your DIY desktop organizer.

Because the foundations I chose for my cabinet crossed in front of the bottom drawer, I chose to use the bottom of the cabinet as a shelf. The bottom drawer was then placed on top of my DIY desktop organizer.

You can glue the bottom drawer to the top of the cabinet. Or, simply rest it on top. This will enable you to grab everything on top in the drawer and move it from room to room with you. I put my most used items in the top drawer.
Because the bottom of my DIY desktop organizer is a shelf, I added cute containers to the bottom to hold various craft and office supplies.
Then I filled my DIY desktop organizer with everything I need, freeing up space on my desk shelves in the process.
