Are you touching up or changing colors. Easy-peasy to stay with black: check HD or Lowes for wrought iron spray paint. Changing colors would probably involve more than one coat.

Start at one end and work slowly across I always use a brush and Hammerite paint, but in US it might be called Rushkins?

    Hi Marie,

First clean it thoroughly then scrub with a wire brush to remove any rust and clean again. Once everything is clean, you can use Rustoleum paint - either spray or brush on the paint it. Spraying makes more of a mess, so you have to cover everything in the spray path. Brushing leaves less of a mess but takes longer. Your choice. Wishing you the best.

  • Brush, foam applicator, spray paint or paint mitt. Just depends on your personal painting style.

Depending on the detail in your wrought iron fence... brush painting might not be as practical as spray painting.

First, use a wire brush and get rid of any flaking paint or rust.

Second use a some sand paper to smooth any roughness

Third use a good primer like Rustoleum's Rusty Metal Primer and use a paint product from the same manufacturer...for better compatability

Fourth... figure out some sort of "backer" like a large sheet or cardboard, or plywood (or an old sheet stapled to a wood frame) to keep the paint from just spraying out into space.

NOTE: if you are spray painting.... WAIT for a day with little or NO WIND... and if it gets very windy... STOP and try again another day... wind can send the spray paint in all sorts of directions and onto things you would rather not have it on...like the neighbors brand new car.

Fifth... spray paint using light even coats.... lighter coats will dry faster... and avoid drips.... multiple light coats will be better than trying for one really heavy one

A million years ago when I lived in NYC, I saw professional painters painting iron fences, railings and balusters by wearing gloves. They must sell them in paint stores.

Wow, Emily, that is really intriguing, never would have thought of that.
