I'm pretty sure you can. We tried this one year to keep the plants off the ground (dogs that just would run through the garden) and it was fairly successful. We used the small size tomatores, but the directions we had did not specify a particular type of tomato.

I guess you can, but if yours goes the same as mine, it will turn it'self to reach the sky............

    Hi Jennifer,

I agree with Pat. The one issue I've noticed from others that have done this is that they often start to look brown at the top near the roots. I don't know if it's a watering issue or not, so pay attention to that. I've also noticed that most of them turn to face the sun. I think the planter should be rotated daily for even growth. Wishing you the best.

  • My nextdoor neighbors do this every year, they are not picky about choosing tomatoes and over the years have been fairly successful with all types. Certainly worth a try if you have never done it.

It really depends on where you live... here in AZ they dried out too fast, due to the lack of humidity....the upside down tomatoes are planted in a special planter.... you might have better success planting in a container.. it will take up the same vertical space... because you have to walk around the hanging one anyway.

It is fun to try....the tomato plant curves up to face the sun. Ours produced tomatoes, though smaller and fewer than plants in the ground but was fun to watch. I do not think you have to have a special kind of tomatoe plant.

I actually tried this and found it to be an adventure in high maintenance just to keep it watered.
