Tired of looking at these stripes. Also, how can I change the curtains underneath? I work nights and would love to get some blackout curtains.

  • It is a cornice, and should be screwed to the wall. You can easily unscrew from wall, recover yourself and replace. While you have it off, take a look at the curtain hardware too. Looks like you have a double rod with sheers and drapes with blinds underneath. If you want to change those too, then update while cornice / valance is down and being recovered. You can do this!

Just to add to the previous answer....to recover the valances just cut your fabric to the correct size and attach to the back of valance box with staples, hot glue, fabric adhesive or something similar. Just make sure you have pulled the fabric really tight!

Hardware store sell window shades that are white colored but don't let any light in. About your cornice as others have said it is easy to change the fabric, but your curtains underneath the cornice should extend as far as it does. Even if there is no window under all of the curtain and/or valance.

Your cornice does not seem to be centered over your window. When you replace it, ensure the center point of the cornice is aligned with the center point of your window. Also, your curtain rod hangers should be placed so that your curtain reaches both sides of your cornice.

If you do not have the time (or inclination) to recover the cornice, remove it from the wall and spray paint it. As for blackout curtains, Walmart has inexpensive panels. To pull the look together, you could stencil the same border on the cornice and curtain. You could also purchase ribbon or trim that tie the cornice and curtain together and glue them on (I like Alene's OK To Wash It glue). This will not hold up as well as more expensive options, but with the small investment of time and money, you can afford to change it when you want a new look!

"IN Fashion" is what you choose it to be. Just add more batting and maybe some faux leather. You can redo your cornice with a multitude of different fabric choices and make it in fashion to suit your style. I believe anything we create ourselves is considered to always be in fashion.
