Pet friendly water treatment for water fountain

I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions on a treatment for water in my fountain that would be safe for dogs.Any treatments I find in stores warn of toxicity for animals.i have had suggestions for using a small amount of bleach but would rather use a natural completly safe alternative.

What is your water source? Is the fountain constantly recycling?
We purchase spring water. No chemicals. You do have to look closely, many waters are from someone's tap and not really spring water.
If you have water recirculating and just have some green growing you can put a small sliver of a calorie tab in it. I have done with my horses and it doesn't hurt them.
