as long as there is drainage holes ,any containers based on the size of the herbs can be used
i like galvanized wash tubs....if you get a new one...punch drainage holes in it. If you get a slightly rusty one it may come with holes.

I keep mine in a rectangular window box - just keep the rosemary and parsley together in a different box - they don't like that much water
A window box type planter would work well.
What about something like this: https://smile.amazon.com/Vertical-Gardening-Stackable-Mr-Stacky/dp/B00W42J0G2/ref=sr_1_39?ie=UTF8&qid=1523236707&sr=8-39&keywords=container+for+herb+garden
If you can find a plastic or wood soda bottle or milk bottle carrier, you would have room for six plants in each carton. And no need to paint, unless you want to, because they will already be rustic. ☺️
Any small container will work to grow them individually. If you want them all in one container, there are plastic planters of different colors that fit in a window sill or on a deck and are very inexpensive. Some people prefer metal containers, and there are many choices of those in department stores nurseries too. If you are handy with a hammer and saw, you could make one out of 1 x 6 or 1 x4 boards. It depends on what you want to spend and how you want it to look. Herbs grow like weeds and for the most part are very easy to grow.
This may seem crazy but the first thing that came to mind was a strawberry pot. It has different openings so you can grow various types and it will help control the growth since you will be cooking with them as they grow. Now if you want a large bounty so that you can dry them and use throughout the year then I love the galvanized steel idea in fact I want some because I do dry them and use them and would love to not have to be working in the ground with all the weeds. I just need to find them,I guess I'll look on amazon.
If you drink soda, cut the bottoms off of a 2 or 3 liter plastic soda bottle and poke holes. Instant planters! (Poke a few holes in the tops and tie them together if you want them connected)
