Sounds like you are possibly talking about a planter box? If that is the case, you can line them with plastic, or you can paint on a non-toxic sealant. For drainage you can drill holes in the bottom so it doesn't hold water. Another option would be to put a pot inside to hold the plant. The thing with wooden planters is that eventually you are going to get some rot, but you can prolong the life with a little care
Are you going to put a plant in it? I would seal the wood with a clear coat meant for watercraft (marine).
If this is a window box - I have put plastic planters inside. Just take your measurements to a discount store that sells such things, and you should be able to get a box the correct size. Just make sure there are holes in each of them, and try to line them up. You can also spray the window box with clear polyurethanes spray paint to protect it, and it will last longer.
I line mine with black plastic stapled at the top inside the box. Add rocks for drainage in the plastic, and plant as usual.
You'll want to line it with plastic but be sure to have holes in the bottom for drainage or your plant roots will rot.
I just use stones that are laying around and are also able to be purchased
