My daughter in law asked me if I could help her out with her little cabinet she wanted to put in her massage studio. Of course I took the challenge with out seeing it! Crazy me! It was pretty rough. It was home made with different types of wood and stained a crazy fluorescent green that I battled to remove. But I finally finished it and hope she loves it!
Cute little cabinet
Someone had painted over the green with a grey paint. The wood was plywood, 2 X 4’s and fence wood. My daughter in law likes green but this was way to much green!
Way to bright!
I pulled out my orbital sander to get started and see what we had. It took me two whole days just to get down to the green!
Once I stared sanding I realized that the green must have been a stain, after getting through multiple paints I still could get rid of the bright green.
Working my way through paints
I even tried a little stripper with no luck.
Like I said it was rough, so my only thoughts were to make it rustic. And since the green wasn’t going away I would incorporate a calmer green into the mix.
once I got her sanded down as much as I could I taped off the back which was a composite panel. Painted it a calmer color.
much better!
Stained a base color of green.
Since I knew I couldn’t get rid of all the green I decided to stain my base color of green IKEA glazing paint on the cabinet. Then I lightly sanded before next step to give it more rustic charm and accept the next color.
Added some texture with a tan
Then I dry brushed some Behr sample paint in tan lightly over areas to create some texture. Then I lightly sanded again and dry brushed some minwax Mahogany stain it areas to Create more aged texture. Lastly I went over it again with sander and applied The final coat was done of minwax weathered oak. I think it really finished it off
Painted hinges
I tried soaking the hinges in paint thinner, but all the colors din’t budge. So I spray painted a Krylon flat black and found some black screws. And put her back together.
Here she is rustic and all.
She now has a new life, even as rough as she was.
Lots of texture
Now that she is done, and all my blood sweat and tears. I think I don’t want to give her up. She has so much personally.

I stumbled upon your page Ruth. And when I did, and seen that piece of junk I started to leave. But my curiosity made me stay and I'm glad I did. You made that beat up old stand into a diamond in the rough. What a great job, and I wouldn't blame you if you didn't give it back to your daughter in-law. But I'm sure her eye's lit up when she seen what you did with that "piece of junk". I'm sure you lit up also to be the one to present it to her and be really proud of your work. I give you 10 atta-boy's.
