    HI Trishboudet,
Be very careful with bamboo. It is considered very invasive. In fact, in some places it's illegal to grow it. Your best bet, after checking your local laws, your best bet is to grow them in containers or use the clumping type and keep them trimmed. You can also block the runner type with a deep barrier all the way around the plant. Click the link below to learn how to plant them and block the running type.

Hi, Linda - thank you for your reply. We are hoping to screen our backyard from the school just beyond it. I think the perennial bamboo may just be the answer! Trish Boudet

Although bamboo is beautiful I have never grown it, neighbor has it in her backyard and it is growing everywhere. Not sure who planted it but, wow, it takes off. Good luck to you.
  • Bamboo can completely take over. If you want the bamboo look but easier to care for, try a "clumping " variety like heavenly bamboo. See if this will work for you.

Unless you're planning on harvesting it for cooking or woodworking projects, think of something else to plant. Once started it's virtually impossible to get rid of.
