Double paned picture window

I just had new windows installed and noticed the large living room window has smudges on the inside of the double pane window. The installer said he will replace it but he’s not taking the entire window out.... he’s just going to cut around the frame and replace the inside window. Can anyone tell me if this is how it’s done or is contractor just cutting corners? Thank you once again!

You can do it that way, but since you already paid to have the windows installed perfectly, you shouldn't have to wait for him to do it.

NO, double glass windows are gas filled and sealed. His answer is a joke.

  • Exactly as Russbow98 said! Condensation will buildup between the panes and leaves stains that you can't get to. Coming from someone that loves clean windows that has to get used of foggy stained ones. The whole thing needs to be replaced. Wishing you the best.

I believe you’re right. I remember when I was a kid my parents had double paned windows and the picture window had a leak after the warranty expired of course! It was awful! And I feel the same way you do....I love crystal clear windows!

BS! Double pane glass is one solid piece. There is a seal between two panes of glass keeps the inert gas inside. The pane of glass would need to be removed/replaced not the window necessarily. Could be the glass panes weren't properly cleaned at the factory before they were bonded together or the seal just failed.

The installer said it looked like they weren’t cleaned at the factory. Boy it’s just one thing after another with this place!

It can be fixed the way he is wanting to do it, but I am concerned that it will void your manufacturers warranty. If it was an old window, I'd be fine with replacing the sealed glass, but you paid for a new window and you should have a complete new window.
